Jan Baker has an infectious enthusiasm for Human Resources — and she found a fit at Verus, where she continues a 30-year career that has always been about the people.

From her beginnings as an elementary school teacher to directing a private Christian school in Alabama, she has always focused on fostering environments where individuals can thrive.

“Then, I really fell in love with human resources,” Jan says.

After moving back to Virginia, Jan found her niche in human resources hiring and supporting elementary school teachers. Despite retiring in June 2023, Jan found that she wasn’t ready to stop working quite yet.

“I really missed helping people and daily interactions with coworkers,” says Jan.

At Verus, Jan thrives on her passion for helping others, which is bolstered by her educational background that includes a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in early childhood education from Georgia Southwestern University and an educational specialist certificate in administration and supervision from Troy University. She also holds a certification as a professional human capital leader in education (PHCLE).

“I’m definitely a people person, and when you can help a person find a place where they can thrive, I love that,” says Jan.

She is responsible for various HR functions at Verus, including recruitment, employee support, and fostering a positive work environment. She plays a crucial role in aligning new hires with the company’s client-focused mission.

“It’s about finding that match, so people are happy where they work. Happy employees are great employees.”
